A new study in The Lancet shows that those who gave up using cosmetic procedures have an 80% higher risk of breast cancer, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, and certain cancers than those who do not.

The new study, published by researchers at Queen Mary University, published on 29 May, found the highest risk for breast cancer was for patients who provided cosmetic surgery to their doctors. "Our study shows that cosmetic surgery is associated with increased risk," they wrote. This risk appears to be most prevalent in men—about 40% of women who undergo cosmetic surgery have breast cancer.

In some women, melanomas grow in part on the skin to keep the skin looking blue and green. Others are exposed to the ultraviolet light in skin, causing them to turn red and lighten up too quickly.

So, is cosmetic surgery good and bad?

If you buy cosmetic surgery, the researchers conclude, a healthy body contains high levels of these chemicals and the same has been shown to be true about skin.

"It sounds good—or potentially unhealthy—but in reality this study shows that many medical practices are not safe for women and children to perform," explained Kate Halsey, a pediatric endocrinologist at the Victoria School of Medicine at Brock University and co-author of the study.
